Governor Orders Residential Construction as Essential Business

After much work and effort by your HBA Staff, Board, Members and many others in the industry at the local, state and national level, home builders in Travis County and the City of Austin were able to go back to work on April 2. Despite the DHS CISA Memorandum 2.0 specifically designating residential construction as “Essential Critical Infrastructure”, City and County Orders were not amended until after Governor Abbott’s Executive Order.

This was an important accomplishment after the initial Stay Home – Work Safe Orders issued by the City of Austin and Travis County excluded nearly all construction projects with exceptions of select projects and peoples (e.g., public works, affordable housing, homeless housing, social services, and select essential needs).

Efforts to inform and advise the City, County and State made all the difference and truly exemplify the importance of our ongoing advocacy work. In fact, we’ve learned from the NAHB that the HBA’s advocacy tactics “are being modeled in other cities and states already.” Thank you to the HBA Board and all Members who spoke out on behalf of our industry. The HBA will remain diligent as we continue to navigate this unprecedented crisis.
