Members Should Take Action on Portman-Shaheen Bill
HBA members – take action on the most recent BuilderLink alert.
The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (S. 2137), also known as the Portman-Shaheen Bill, will push overly costly and aggressive energy efficiency requirements in model building energy codes, which harms housing affordability. Please call or write your senators today and urge them to oppose S. 2137. Sponsored by Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), this legislation would:
- Exacerbate the nation’s housing affordability woes by making new homes prohibitively expensive;
- Allow the Department of Energy to hijack the ICC’s consensus-based code development process; and
- Discourage state and local governments from adopting cost-effective and location-appropriate building codes. This legislation would allow the Department of Energy (DOE) to hijack the ICC’s consensus-based code development process.
