Village Farm’s Tiny Home Community Addresses Austin’s Affordability Crisis
HBA Member Village Farm, a dynamic tiny house community based in East Austin is addressing Austin’s affordability crisis. With an initial phase of 42 home sites and an additional 112 sites in phase two, buyers have the ability to own for as low as $70,000. Big on character, small in space, the free-standing tiny homes come in multiple designs with 399 sq. ft. Each tiny home is rooted in sustainable design, built using environmentally friendly materials, striking the perfect balance between sustainable living and modern convenience.
Carrie Barrett, Village Farm’s first tiny homeowner has lived in Austin for 13 years and believes “tiny home living is an affordable solution to the Austin housing market while it also offers a turnkey lifestyle for who those who want to live the Austin scene.” Barrett, who works as a sign interpreter goes on to say that “Austin struggles to provide affordable housing at a luxury scale. Village Farm fills a niche for professionals who want to live in a beautiful neighborhood, with a custom house, close to downtown.”
Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of Village Farm. Amenities include a general store and café, community kitchen, amphitheater, pathways and sidewalks connecting homes, a farm, gardens, a school, neighborhood pocket parks and commercial areas weaving a network reminiscent of a tradition village. Green Gate Farm, a USDA certified organic farm, has also partnered with the community and residents to create a community resource for neighbors of all incomes. As one of the first tiny homeowners to move in, Sarah Cox, who is an employee of Baylor, Scott & White believes “the plans to move the tiny homes to the farm across the street was a huge appeal” in their decision to move from their Georgetown home recently.
Roughly half of the original 42 lots are available, following the move-in of 20+ residents. Phase II broke ground in early 2019 and once construction is complete, the organic farm will reopen as the center of Village Farm. A portion of Phase II’s 122 lots and new amenities are target ed for delivery in Q1 2020.
